My knowledge of Islam is rudimentary but I have read the Qur'an and am now reading Robert Spencer's 'Critical Qur'an' with footnotes which cites explanation and cross references from Hadith sources by historically respected Islamic scholars. I see the regular articles on world wide 'Jihad' topics on Jihadwatch. org. I admit this does not make me an expert - but perhaps as a non Muslim I am better informed than most ?

We are continually told that there are 'moderate' Muslims and as you suggest Momus, these folk seem indeed to be Muslims who do not practice their faith as it is written. That in fact they are 'bad' in those terms and can be, and are, called to stricter conformity by fundamental Islamists.

I would like to see this question asked to a room full of Muslims :

"Do you believe that the Qur'an is a written account of the literal and actual words of Allah, as transmitted to the Prophet by the Angel Gabriel - and that nothing in it can be changed, challenged or ignored?

Would any 'moderate' Muslim in the room stand up and denounce this statement ?

For this is in my opinion the crux of the whole thing.

And for those non believers with Muslim friends try asking them directly if the Qur'an allows them to take non believers as 'friends'
