The Green Party Latest Ad campaign for Gorton & Denton by-election: Translated
For ease of reference, I have added captions to the video.
The Urdu used in the video is actually not that good. In the first sentence they said Zulm (tyranny) instead of Zalim (tyrant) - Zulm is a verb and Zalim is an adjective which should have been used.
So, what is said is more tyrant/oppressor rather than a criminal. But there is hardly a tyrant or oppressor who isn't a criminal. I added the criminal part for context as the difference in sentence structures and grammar makes it hard to translate like for like.
This is why if you ask AI to go word for word translations it can get really muddy, you would be able to get the gist of it but won’t be able to understand. I have translated it by ear, as I can speak, read and write Urdu, although admittedly not as good as I used to before. Well, I have not practiced it much for past 16 years that I have been in England so what do you expect.
Translation:
Narrator: On 26th of February, a tyrant/oppressive/criminal politician can win the seat for Gorton and Denton, if we don't vote Green to stop Reform.
Hannah: My name is Hannah Spencer, I am the candidate for Green.
Narrator now speaking as Hannah Spencer:
"Shopkeepers, drivers, cleaners and mothers - it is we who keep this area running. But politicians are not working for us. Bills are rising, higher rents are pushing us out of homes, and even though we are working doubly hard we are still earning less.
Reform wants to destroy our communities. They want to deport families and households who have been living here for years. And put higher taxes on those who have been born abroad. They give rise to Islamophobia, and put our safety and security at risk.
But there is another way. I am standing as Green candidate because I know who I represent. I know what it is like to work hard for a living. And to make power and greed answerable.
On 26th of February, we will have to unite our votes behind Green. This is the only way to stop Reform. I will fight for all my constituents. For rent caps, lower bills, and for cleaner streets/alleys.
We have made Gorton and Denton together, and we all have a right here."
I also translated their previous campaign pamphlets for the same by-election:
"Give one more push to the falling walls"
"Labour needs to be punished for Gaza (betrayal of Gaza)"
"Reform to be defeat and Green to be voted"
"Vote for Green Party to give a strong voice for the Muslims" / "Vote for Green party for the Muslims, for a strong voice"
Again the Urdu being used is not really that good. I suspect there are actually Punjabi speakers who are doing these ads in Urdu, because Urdu is similar to slang Hindi which is spoken and understood by most people from the Indian subcontinent, and also sometimes spoken and understood by the people from Bangladesh.
