The immaturity of the political right will give victory to the left once again
There are so many issues with all the parties on the political right that I don’t think any of them will be able to get their shit together by the next general election. As a result we will have another low turnout, maybe even lower than 2024, and either Labour on their own or with a Lib Dem coalition will be in power again.
I think this is the possible scenario we are facing. At the moment I see no signs of it being countered. Because you don’t just have to get your shit together, you also have to convince the public by giving them something real to vote for, apart from populist gimmick slop. And the online social media campaigning doesn’t translate to electoral success especially in non-metropolitan places, while metropolitan regions are too left wing to ever vote for you in majority at this point.
You cannot go so divided to the public campaigning in person. The moment you start having any discussion that involves more than 2 parties who have similar narratives but personality clashes you lose the audience. They may be nice to your face and agree with whatever you say, but in their mind their level of care will just take a deep dive. With two parties on the right, Tories and Reform, you can hold the audience attention. One can say “oh they are establishment and they have ruined the country in their 14 years in power”, and the other can say “oh we need stable hands, and we can’t take the risk of letting these volatile people take charge”, or whatever iteration of such back and forth. People will still be infused to come out and vote. But when you introduce another who attacks the one that attacks the establishment, whether they are right or not for doing so and I happen to believe they are right in attacking Reform, you just lose the audience.
This is no longer a problem of who is right or who is wrong. This is a matter of how to convince the public to do the right thing, and that can’t happen unless the political parties start leading my example. Because people won’t really look at your policies. They are just so fed up and are really asking for bare minimum. And if you can’t even put your egos aside to deliver on bare minimum common sense then they will just lose all interest, and they already have lost interest in the democratic process, the system isn’t working for them and so the system has no use for them.
The political right will not achieve an electoral victory of significance unless at least one of them stops being slop populists of the same kind with different brand names. One of them has to detach themselves from Thatcherism. One of them has to fully embody the traditionalist conservativism ethos. And then reach out across the board to merge forces. Otherwise none of you have the intention to preserve and conserve anything, you are just interested to see who can make the most by selling British brand while it is still trading.
At this point, I don’t even care about personalities, although not sure I ever did to that greater extent. I just want people to do the right thing especially when it is so easy to do it. Humble yourself, drop the ego, realise the existential threat this country is under, and act accordingly.
The sniping and infighting between Tories, Reform, and Restore is proving to be highly demoralising for the public. Again, doesn’t matter who is right or wrong, doesn’t matter who has what policies. The optics are wrong, dirty laundry out in the open so often, personalities are bigger than policies, and it doesn’t show capability of unity which doesn’t inspire public unity. This is just further showcasing people their immaturity because even now their first and foremost rebuttal would be, “yes, but he started it” or “yes but I am right”. It doesn’t matter. You are all wrong if you can’t inspire a nation to overturn its fate. People will get demoralised even further, they will not come out to vote in most constituencies, and it will give Labour or a coalition of left to win the elections again.
And perhaps that is what is needed. Because this much decline in a culture and society is never meant to be fixed by the system that enabled it.
