Always good to have your take on this topic Momus. You understand the situation far better than most of us.
A bit off topic - but on the theme of Pakistan I saw an interview with Ben Habib recently in which he highlighted his Pakistani heritage and stated Pakistan was a '"Proud country" . I was surprised.
I found myself asking myself "What have they got to be proud of ?"
My experience is admittedly limited to observing the behaviour of Pakistanis in Britain.
Am I being unkind or unfair?
I don't wish them harm.
I just don't see they enrich the UK - far from that.
And I think we would be better off without them , their chip on the shoulder attitude and their intolerant , uncompromising and incompatible religion.
I think when he thinks of Pakistanis, he mostly think about those either in his circle or the ones from an era when he was in Pakistan - the sanity of most Pakistanis have changed very much since then. Also, Pakistan is a country with 240+ million people, we have a few million of the worst, like I highlighted in the article, the most educated one are a minority but a different class of people all together.
Also, I think he might be thinking like a PM already, if you know what I mean. Of how he would be dealing with them when it comes to remigration of their people back to the country. Just like Trump - see the rhetoric he uses - complimenting people he doesn't like - art of the deal sort of thing. He is being diplomatic, while I have luxury of being blunt, as I don't intend to be a politician haha.
But from having talked with Ben personally, and met him, he is a very genuine person. He cares very deeply about Britain. And I do not believe for a second that he would put anyone's interest before that of the Brits.
